Become a mentor

  • “Mentoring aims to provide a purposeful, structured and trusting relationship, that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement”. New Zealand Youth Mentoring Network (2016)
  • Each of our recipients of a Good Start Foundation Scholarship will be matched with their own personal mentor. The most important aspect of a mentor’s role is to assist their student to manage their first year out of school, transitioning into tertiary study and maintaining a commitment to community involvement.

What are the qualities of a mentor?

We are looking for mentors who will be:

  • Guide/coach
  • Wise “mate”
  • Advisor
  • Positive role model
  • Listener and sounding board

What is your role as a mentor with Good Start Foundation?

  • To establish a positive, trusting, and mutual relationship with your mentee.
  • To walk alongside your mentee as they transition into tertiary study.
  • To assist them to establish their goals and objectives for the year.
  • To help your mentee to develop life skills to manage their workload and independence.
  • To increase your mentee’s ability to interact with people from various backgrounds and broaden their professional and supportive networks.

What are the mentor commitments?

Your commitments are to:

  • Meet at least once a month with your mentee and be in regular phone, email, or text contact.
  • Be available for one year.
  • Attend a mentor training induction.
  • Communicate with the Good Start Foundation team and assist in resolving any problems or difficulties that may arise.
